I would advise against this unit for a few reasons, but mainly for the reasons of cost. All you're really getting for the cost is a few extra unnecessary bells and whistles plus an extra ounce as opposed to the
Garmin eTrex Vista HCx which I found in a local Cabela's bargain cave for $140 which included all the adapters and map software.
However, while the etrex vista is a solid unit, the garmin mapping software is terrible.
so another great option which you should be able to find somewhere on discount is the DeLorme Earthmate PN-20 GPS which is a great machine plus it is also an ounce lighter. The great thing about this package is that the unit is always a bundle package including software etc....
and the delorme mapping software (topo usa 7)is really good, as compared to the garmin garbage.
the one selling point to this software is that topo usa actually scales down to 1:24,000 whereas the garmin topo united states 2008 only scales to 1:100,000. Keep this in mind.
I was coming here to recommend the DeLorme unit as well. I was looking at the PN-40, which is just the same unit, with a barometric altimeter, electronic compass, higher SD card capacity (more maps), and a significantly faster redraw rate. Also, I would like to second Dent's point about the scale. DeLorme's maps are way better.
